Acceptable Use Policy
This Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) outlines the rules and guidelines for using PhoneNet. By using our services, you agree to abide by this policy. Our network is a resource for hobbyists and enthusiasts, and its continued operation depends on the respectful and responsible behaviour of all users.
1. General Principles
- Respect and Courtesy: All users are expected to treat one another with respect. Harassment, threats, and hate speech are strictly prohibited.
- Lawful Use: You must use the network in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws.
- One Person Per Account: Each account is intended for use by one individual only. Sharing accounts is prohibited.
- No Commercial Use: This network is for hobbyist and non-commercial use only. Using the network for commercial purposes, advertising, or soliciting is not permitted without express written permission from PhoneNet Administration.
- Security: Do not attempt to compromise the security of the network or other users’ devices. This includes, but is not limited to, unauthorised access, port scanning, or distributing malware.
2. Prohibited Activities
The following activities are strictly prohibited on PhoneNet:
- Harassment and Bullying: Making unwanted, threatening, or harassing calls or messages to other users.
- Illegal Activities: Using the network to facilitate any illegal acts, including fraud, distribution of illegal content, or unauthorised access to computer systems.
- Spam: Sending unsolicited bulk messages or making a large number of unwanted calls.
- Network Abuse: Any action that interferes with the proper functioning of the network or disproportionately consumes network resources, such as denial-of-service (DoS) attacks or using automated scripts to make a large number of calls.
- Privacy Violations: Attempting to intercept or eavesdrop on the private communications of other users.
- Misrepresentation: Impersonating another person or entity.
- Sharing PhoneNet Resources: As a PhoneNet user you may be provided with software or other resources to allow you to make the most of your services with us. Sharing these resources with third parties without our approval is not allowed.
3. Age Restriction
The minimum age for using PhoneNet is 16 years old. Users who are found to be under this age will have their access terminated.
If you have joined PhoneNet prior to August 25, 2025 you are subject to the previous minimum age policy which was 13 or above.
4. One Person Per Account
Each PhoneNet user must have their own account. It is not permitted to request and provide hosted lines, office codes, or any other PhoneNet for other people without express prior approval from PhoneNet Administration.
If you run your own PBX you may request a PhoneNet office code and provide extensions to users that are reachable from PhoneNet. As the office code holder you will be responsible for ensuring that your users abide by our policies.
5. Do not block PhoneNet Staff
In managing any services you may have with PhoneNet we may need to contact you via various communication mediums.
If we discover that you have blocked communication from PhoneNet then we reserve the right to cancel your services without notice.
6. Consequences of Policy Breaches
Breaching this AUP will result in consequences based on the severity and frequency of the violation. The following actions may be taken by PhoneNet Administration:
- Verbal or Written Warning: For minor or first-time offenses, a warning may be issued.
- Temporary Suspension: Repeat or more serious offenses may result in a temporary suspension of your account and network access.
- Permanent Ban: Severe violations, such as as illegal activities, harassment, hate speech, or repeated offenses, will result in a permanent ban from the network. This includes the termination of all associated services and a permanent prohibition from rejoining.
- Reporting to Authorities: In cases of illegal activity, administrators may be required to report the violation and any relevant information to law enforcement agencies.
Administrators reserve the right to determine what constitutes a violation of this policy and to take action as deemed appropriate. Your continued use of PhoneNet signifies your acceptance of these terms.
By using our network, you understand and agree to this policy and the potential consequences of breaching it.
